Big Little Women
Part of Arabian Film Nights 2024. Before the screening, Dareen Razouk will offer some additional background information. Originally from Syria but now residing in Rotterdam, Dareen is actively engaged in organizing activities for women within the SamenDoorSamen-program. This initiative provides newcomers in Rotterdam with opportunities to participate and progress towards education or employment through training sessions. Dareen is also a passionate admirer of Nawal El Saadawi.
Three generations of women revolt against patriarchal mandates and prohibitions. In this cinematic letter, Swiss-Egyptian director Nadia Fares pays homage to her father. She recounts 75 years of women’s struggle in both Egypt, her father’s homeland, and Switzerland, her mother’s homeland where she grew up. She explores the impact of patriarchal traditions in the East and the West, revealing them as mirrors of each other. Remarkable about this film is that it marks the final public appearance of Nawal el Saadawi, an influential Egyptian gynecologist, feminist, political activist, and writer, renowned for her works on women’s duties, violence against women, and feminism.
Drie generaties vrouwen komen in opstand tegen patriarchale geboden en verboden. In deze filmische brief brengt de Zwitsers-Egyptische regisseur Nadia Fares een eerbetoon aan haar vader. Ze vertelt over 75 jaar vrouwenstrijd in zowel Egypte, het land van haar vader, als in Zwitserland, het land van haar moeder, waar zij opgroeide.
