Watermelon Day: Israelism

Erin Axelman, Sam Eilertsen

On Watermelon Day (Saturday, August 3rd) we will be screening the documentary Israelism, followed by a panel discussion in collaboration with RPC and Friends of Handala. The discussion will explore the significance of the watermelon as a symbol of resistance and its deeper meaning. We will also cover current events. The panel discussion will be held in English.

About the film

Two young American Jews, Simone Zimmerman and Eitan, were raised to defend the state of Israel at all costs. Eitan joins the Israeli army, while Simone supports Israel on “the other battlefield”: American university campuses. Witnessing firsthand the mistreatment of Palestinians by Israel, they are shocked and deeply saddened.

They join a movement of young American Jews challenging the old guard on Israel’s role in American Judaism and advocating for freedom for the Palestinian people. Their stories reveal a generation gap within the American Jewish community, as more young Jews question the narratives they were taught in synagogues and Hebrew schools.

Israelism is an American documentary from 2023 directed by two Jewish filmmakers who share a similar narrative. The film premiered at various film festivals in the United States and received a Brooklyn Film Festival Spirit Award.

Panel members:

  • Hossam Alfarra: a Palestinian activist from Gaza. He is a member of BDS.NL, spoke at multiple universities to boycott Israeli institutes, organized events at Palestine Café Utrecht to grow the community, and is also a member of Utrecht for Palestine.
  • Eman Khasawneh: A Palestinian by blood and soul, committed to promoting global equality and justice, driven by personal experiences with various forms of dehumanization.
  • Majdolin: As a Palestinian, she views the fight for justice as a duty. She believes that freeing Palestine is integral to global liberation and consistently advocates for education and resistance.
  • Yuval Gal: Grew up as an Israeli in occupied Palestine and moved to the Netherlands in 2009. Yuval is active in Erev Rav and Bij1, working towards justice and equality.
