De twaalfjarige Bailey woont met haar alleenstaande vader Bug en haar broer Hunter in een vervallen kraakpand in North Kent. Haar slaapkamer is een slaapzak op de vloer afgescheiden met een doorzichtig gordijntje. Zij zoekt elke kans om te ontsnappen. Vanwege haar fascinatie voor vogels brengt Bailey dag en nacht door op de top van een appartementenblok. Hier kijkt zij uit over de stad en verdwijnt ze in haar gedachten. Architectuur stond vanaf het begin centraal in het sociaal-realistische werk van Andrea Arnold. Vooral Red Road is een fantastisch voorbeeld van een gebouw als een personage in film, namelijk het Red Road sociale woningbouwproject van Glasgow. Maar ook in Fish Tank staat het flatgebouw en de connotatie met de Britse arbeidersklasse centraal. Bird is een hedendaags fabel en authentiek portret van hedendaagse jeugd met acteurs Barry Keoghan en Franz Rogowski.
Twelve-year-old Bailey lives with her single father and her brother Hunter in a dilapidated squat in North Kent. Her bedroom is a sleeping bag on the floor, cordoned off by a see-through curtain. She avails of every opportunity to escape. Owing to her fascination with birds, Bailey spends the day and light on the roof of the apartment block, where she looks across the city and loses herself in thoughts. From the outset, architecture was a core concern in the social-realist work of Andrea Arnold. Red Road in particular is a fantastic example of a building as a film character, namely the Red Road social housing development in Glasgow. In Fish Tank, the block of flats and the connotation with Britain’s working class takes centre stage. Bird is a contemporary fable and authentic portrait of today’s youth with actors Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski.
