De Architect: Making Dust
Een poëtisch requiem over de sloop van de op een na grootste kerk van Ierland: Church of the Annunciation in de buitenwijk Finglas West van Dublin. Naar aanleiding van een essay van architectuurhistoricus Ellen Rowley onderzoekt de film de sloop als een breuk in de Ierse geschiedenis. Hoe gaan we om met gebouwen waarvan de oorspronkelijke functie zinloos is geworden door veranderingen in de maatschappij? In geluidsopnames van nabije kappers leren we hoe de sociale functie van de Katholieke kerk is veranderd en er een andere rol is voor sacrale ruimtes in hedendaags Ierland. A lyrical requiem about the dismantling of the second biggest church in Ireland: the Church of the Annunciation in the Dublin suburb of Finglas West. Based on an essay by architectural historian Ellen Rowley, the film examines the dismantling as a rupture in Irish history. How do we treat buildings that have lost their original function owing to changes in society? In audio recordings from nearby hairdressers, we hear how the social function of the Catholic church has changed and how there is another role for sacred spaces in contemporary Ireland. An ability to adapt turns out to be essential for healthy architecture. The film also looks at the life cycle of materials and the pollution caused by demolition. Making Dust is an essayistic film about the essence of architecture made by filmmaker and researcher Fiona Hallinan, cofounder of the Department of Ultimology, which carries out research into that which is dead or dying as a way of thinking about transformation.
