De verstedelijking van China is mede gebouwd op de 285 miljoen arbeiders die heen en weer pendelen tussen hun huis op het platteland en hun werk in de stad. Dit heeft geleid tot de ontbinding van traditionele familiestructuren, omdat grootouders nu de kinderen opvoeden terwijl de ouders weg zijn om te werken. De verdwenen huishuidens, de traditionele sociaal-culturele wortels en China’s recente geschiedenis van nationale collectivisering zijn prachtig met elkaar verweven in deze film, die met ruimtelijk-temporele collages een blik werpt op het dagelijks leven in een dorp op het Chinese platteland, met speciale focus op de ruimtelijke consequenties die het samenwonen van verschillende generaties en huishoudens met zich meebrengt.
China’s urbanisation has relied on a population of 285 million workers floating between their homes in the countryside and their work in the cities. This has lead to the dissolution of traditional family structures, as grandparents raise the children, while the parents are away for work. Dissolved households, traditional socio-cultural roots, and China’s recent history of national collectivisation, beautifully interweave in the spatio-temporal collages of this film offering a glimpse into the daily life in a village in rural China with a particular focus on the spatial conditions of intergenerational and cross-household interdependent living.
