Koffi returns to Congo after 18 years to introduce his pregnant wife to his family and pay the bride price, but he faces resistance from his family due to old beliefs. The reunion, however, does not go as expected: although Koffi tries with all his might to rebuild the bonds, he remains a “sign of the devil” to the community. Together with others who bear the same label, he fights against these stigmas in an enchanting drama about identity and acceptance, set against the backdrop of a magical-realist Congo.
Augure is the first feature film by Baloji, a Belgian-Congolese rapper and performer, inspired by his name, which acquired the loaded meaning of ‘sorcerer’ during colonial times. In addition to directing and writing the screenplay, Baloji also designed the costumes and recorded four brand new albums for the film, based on the main characters. The visually stunning result was awarded the New Voice Prize at Cannes and won many other international prizes.
