It’s summer in Budapest. High school student Abel struggles to focus on his final exams while realizing he’s hopelessly in love with his best friend Janka. The bookworm Janka, in turn, harbors unrequited feelings for the married history teacher Jakab, who previously clashed with Abel’s conservative father. Tensions of a polarized society unexpectedly surface when Abel’s history exam turns into a national scandal.
The third feature film by Hungarian director Gabor Reisz, following For Some Inexplicable Reason and Bad Poems, was inspired by developments at Reisz’s alma mater, the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest. There, Viktor Orbán’s autocratic regime forced a reorganization in which the university lost its autonomy.
