Kneecap - Expat Cinema Rotterdam
Miss seeing international films because you can’t yet keep up with the Dutch subtitles? Want to meet fellow expats and new Dutch folks? Love cinema? Then this is the event for you! Join Expat Cinema Rotterdam for the best international art house cinema with English subtitles.
A wildly original and exhilarating sex, drugs, and hip-hop biopic that fictionalizes the rise of the rap group Kneecap. The Belfast rappers wield the Irish language as their weapon in this high-energy comedy, evoking the same raw, rebellious spirit that Trainspotting brought to cinemas 28 years ago.
In Kneecap, the members of the hip-hop trio – Móglaí Bap (Naoise), Mo Chara (Liam Óg), and DJ Próvai (JJ) – play themselves. When bored music teacher JJ crosses paths with friends Naoise and Liam Óg, it sparks the creation of an unprecedented Irish hip-hop act. Rapping in their native tongue, the rebellious trio Kneecap breaks through in Belfast, quickly becoming the face of a civil rights movement fighting to preserve the Irish language. As public debate over language legislation intensifies, police and politicians go to great lengths to silence the anarchistic trio.
The film, awarded the Audience Award at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, captures the unparalleled energy of Kneecap, who electrified several major stages in the Netherlands this summer, culminating in their standout performance at Down The Rabbit Hole. Expect that same explosive energy, now on the big screen.
