Moonlight - Queer Cinema

Barry Jenkins

There will be a panel discussion after the movie.

Moonlight is a coming-of-age drama that follows the life of Chiron, a young black man growing up in a rough Miami neighborhood, as he struggles with his identity, sexuality, and place in the world. The film is divided into three chapters, each focusing on a different stage of Chiron’s life: childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Ultimately, Chiron reconnects with an old friend, Kevin, leading to a moment of introspection and emotional closure as he comes to terms with his past.

A poignant exploration of identity, masculinity, and the complexities of human relationships, offering a powerful and intimate portrayal of one man’s journey to self-acceptance.

Our collaborator this month, ESSM, is part of Stichting Humanitas in Rotterdam, dedicated to supporting marginalized groups in the Rotterdam Rijnmond region and Zuid-Holland. They offer a safe space for social gatherings, education, support services, and shelter for sex workers, victims of human trafficking, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people living with HIV. ESSM operates with a humanistic approach, promoting inclusivity, respect, and diversity while empowering individuals to take control of their lives. They are committed to challenging stigma and injustices, ensuring that everyone can fully participate in society.
