My Favourite Cake - Expat Cinema Rotterdam

Keyke mahboobe man
Maryam Moghadam, Behtash Sanaeeha

Mahin (70) lives alone in Tehran, ever since her husband passed away and her daughter moved to Europe. After an afternoon tea with friends, she decides to break out of her lonely routine and rekindle her love life. In her search for a single man, she visits places from her past, reminiscing about the happy years when she lived more freely.

In a park, Mahin helps a young woman clashing with the morality police over her headscarf, and later, at a restaurant, she meets Faramarz, a kind, single man her own age. He’s a taxi driver with an independent spirit like Mahin’s; he once ran into trouble with the authorities for playing a musical instrument in a wedding band. Mahin invites Faramarz to try her favorite cake, leading to an unexpectedly unforgettable evening.

My Favourite Cake is the latest film from Iranian filmmakers Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha (Ballad of a White Cow). It had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, where it was enthusiastically received by the press and won two awards. Unfortunately, the filmmakers were unable to attend the premiere, as the Iranian authorities denied them permission to travel. The Iranian regime considers the film controversial because it depicts a woman without the mandatory hijab and characters drinking alcohol.
