About the film
This year the Un Certain Regard competition at the Cannes Film Festival opened with Onoda – 10 000 Nights in the Jungle, an epic tale about the dutiful Japanese soldier Hiroo Onoda.
In 1944 – just before the Americans landed – the Empire of Japan sends special agent Hiroo Onoda to Lubang, an island in the Philippines. On the island begins his special mission: unleashing a guerilla war until the Japanese troops return. Onoda’s orders directly contradict the army’s mandate: do not commit suicide, focus on the mission and never give up. As the war rages on and the Empire faces its inevitable end, Onoda refuses to believe his mission has ended.
Onoda – 10 000 Nights in the Jungle is a dazzling odysse about a young soldier who, while battling for his county, evolves into an outsider. Director Arthur Harari based the film on the true story of Hiroo Onoda, who lived on the island for 30 years and refused to believe the war was over. He fought for his country until 1974 (!).
