De kwaadaardige platenmagnaat Swan (Paul Williams) heeft zijn ziel verkocht aan de duivel in ruil voor eeuwige jeugd en succes. Zijn plan voor succes is om de muziek van de songwriter Winslow Leach (William Finley) te stelen om de opening van zijn rockpaleis – The Paradise – te vieren. Wanneer Leach probeert Swan te stoppen wordt hij erin geluisd en opgepakt voor het dealen van drugs en wordt zo het slachtoffer van een ongeluk dat hem verminkt. Leach besluit om zich te verstoppen in The Paradise. Hij verbergt zijn gezicht onder een spookachtig masker en smeed een plan om wraak te nemen op Swan. Leach tekent een contract met Swan om zijn rockopera, gebaseerd op de legende van Faust te voltooien. Tegelijkertijd hoopt hij Phoenix, een ambitieuze zangeres te redden van het verschrikkelijke lot dat haar wacht.
Brian De Palma liep al sinds 1969 rond met het idee voor Phantom of the Paradise na het zien van rockacts zoals de Rolling Stones en Alice Cooper. De manier waarop zij het horrorgenre integreerden in hun optredens fascineerde hem enorm. De Palma realiseerde dat rockmuziek de meest invloedrijke nieuwe vorm van esthetiek representeerde binnen de generatie jongeren en dat het ook binnen het filmgenre ingezet kon worden. Phantom of the Paradise is de eerst verschenen horror-rock-musical-comedy op het grote scherm.
Ongeacht de slechte kritieken en tegenvallende opbrengsten ontving de film een Oscar en Golden Globe nominaties voor beste filmmuziek. Door de jaren heen heeft de film positievere recensies gekregen wat resulteerde in het bereiken van een cultstatus.
The evil record tycoon Swan (Paul Williams) has sold his soul to the devil in exchange for eternal youth and success. His scheme for success is to steal the music of the songwriter Winslow Leach (William Finley) to celebrate the opening of his rock palace, The Paradise. While trying to stop Swan, Leach is framed for drug dealing and becomes a victim of an accident which leaves him disfigured. Leach decides to hide out in The Paradise, but he is hiding his face beneath an eerie mask and planning a gruesome punishment upon Swan. However, Leach signs a contract with Swan to complete his rock opera based on the legend of Faust for an aspiring singer – Phoenix (Jessica Harper) which Leach hopes to save from the terrible fate that awaits her…
The idea for Phantom of the Paradise had been nurtured by Brian De Palma since 1969 when he saw how rock acts like the Rolling Stones & Alice Cooper were incorporating the genre of horror in their acts. De Palma realized that rock music was the most important new aesthetic form present within this generation and that it could be used in a new way in films. Phantom of the Paradise is the screen’s first horror-rock musical comedy.
Regardless of the film being a box office failure and negatively reviewed, it earned much praise for its music, receiving an Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. Over the years, the film has received more positive reviews which has resulted in it becoming a cult film.
