De connectie van het huis met de natuurlijke topografie van de heuvel waarop het is gelegen, is geïnspireerd door aardkunstenaars zoals Michael Heizer en Robert Smithson. Dit werd dan ook de leidraad voor het design van deze iconische woning. Thom Mayne, oprichter van Morphosis en winnaar van de Pritzker Prize, en projectarchitect Robin Donaldson, keren terug naar een van de eerste gerealiseerde projecten van het kantoor: het Crawford House in Montecito, Californië. Het huis combineert op meesterlijke wijze de woonruimte die is ontworpen voor het alledaagse leven met de pure, formele filosofie van Morphosis; zo biedt deze film een diepgaande verkenning van innovatieve ideeën, onderliggende concepten en de unieke mentaliteit van Morphosis.
Inspired by earth artists such as Michael Heizer and Robert Smithson, the connection of the house to the natural topography of the hillside where it is located became the guiding design principle for this iconic residence. Morphosis founder and Pritzker Price winner Thom Mayne, along with project architect Robin Donaldson, return to one of the office’s earliest built projects, the Crawford House in Montecito, California. The house masterfully combines domestic space designed for the everyday life with the pure formal philosophy of Morphosis, making this film a dive into the innovative ideas, underlying concepts and unique attitude of Morphosis.

Kunstverzamelaars Bruce Heavin en Lynda Weinman begonnen aan een ambitieus project om hun droomhuis te bouwen. De samenwerking met architect Robin Donaldson gedurende een periode van zes jaar resulteerde in een indrukwekkend en enigszins onconventioneel huis, dat perfect samengaat met de fascinatie van het stel voor installaties en sculpturen die spelen met optische illusies en technisch vernuft. Het huis heeft twee niveaus en de cirkelvormige indeling biedt binnenplaatsen en openingen die schitterende uitzichten bieden. De architectuur is er zowel op gericht om met de topografie van de locatie samen te gaan als het creëren van een spectaculair object.
Art collectors Bruce Heavin and Lynda Weinman embarked on an ambitious project to build their dream house. Working hand-in-hand with architect Robin Donaldson over a period of six years resulted in an impressive, if slightly unconventional house, which seems to exist in tandem with the couple’s fascination for installations and sculptures playing with optical illusions and technical wizardry. Organised in two levels, in a circular layout punctuated by internal courtyards and openings that offer stunning views, the architecture is as much about working together with the topography of the site as it is about creating a spectacular object.
