The Mother of All Lies - Expat Cinema Rotterdam
In an unorthodox manner, filmmaker Asmae El Moudir reconstructs a painful period from the history of her birth country, Morocco, and her family. Using a miniature set of the house and neighborhood where she grew up, recreated by her father, she has her family and neighbors recount what happened during and after the bread riots in Casablanca in 1981, brutally suppressed by the government.
Particularly, the frail-looking yet still sharp grandmother emerges to have played a significant and not entirely honorable role during a time of oppression marked by executions, arrests, and torture. The intimate, unnatural setting of the recreated miniature neighborhood and the filmmaker’s probing questions compel the main actors to relive the events. This leads to painful memories, new insights, and sometimes even catharsis.
In the meticulously recreated homes and streets, complete with furniture, lighting, and characters, a forgotten history comes to life.
